CBQties StevieD and Scavenger speak about queer characters in comics, with author Robert Rodi and cartoonist Tony Breed. Recorded live at C2E2.
|
From the C2E2 Program:
Depictions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters in comics seem to be breaking away from the purely positive "role model" portrayals that were common in comics over the past decade. Some creators aren't shying away from sex, stereotypes and bad behavior in their pursuit of intriguing and well-rounded characters.
As comics readers clamor for more explicit, more outrageous, and more extreme comics - and hail them as victories over timidity and political correctness - is it time to rewrite the rulebook on queer characters?
Join Stevie D and Joe Faust from the Comic Book Queers podcast, Robert Rodi (Codename: Knockout; Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers), Tony Breed (Finn and Charlie are Hitched) and moderator Charles "Zan" Christensen (The Mark of Aeacus; The Power Within) for a lively, irreverent discussion about the wild frontier of queers in comics.

You know what we like to read, now we ask what you like to read!
You know, it's usually all about us bitchin' and/or moanin' about comics. Well, this week, we're over it!
This time, stevieD sits down with a fellow podcaster, Darren from the Legion of Substitute Podcasters, and asks him the question, "What are you reading now?"

We rely on listeners...well actually one listener to give us the deets on Comicon 2009. Meanwhile, the queerkateers decided to spend their time fantasizing over the Harry Potter Hotties.

Admit it - you saw Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Admit it - you got all tingly (down there) when you saw Ron grasp his...broom. And you could have sworn he was looking right at you through the silver screen with those hot Ginge eyes of his. Sigh.
Anyway, we cover a lot of ground in this episode. The Hot Topics include: Harry Potter, ComiCon 2009, the comic podcast - Chronic Insomnia, listener calls, and of course the latest from Marvel, Image and DC!

Event comics, and the directions that Marvel & DC universes have taken; also, being out as a comic book nerd, and searching for other comic book nerds during gay pride.

While Lindsay stays in her apartment, rolling on ecstacy and emailing
jpegs of her breasts to potential Republican presidential nominees in
the name of world peace, Brett, Eric and Steve discuss recent "event"
comics, and the directions that the Marvel and DC Universes have taken.
In honor of gay pride month, we discuss how "out and proud" we are (and
aren't) as comic book nerds. Finally, in an experiment that flops
badly, we attempt to find other comic book queers on the streets to
interview about their comic book queer pride.

Drunk on cosmos, Brett and Lindsay attempted to have a heterosexual

clinic in Minnesota. Meanwhile, Steve and Eric recorded a "What We're
Reading Now" episode. Books discussed include Silver Surfer: Requiem,
Blue Beetle, Teen Titans, and The Boys.

Our new email addresses, Evil Squirrel, out queer creators, and Marc Andreyko.
In this installment, we obsess about the glories of our new email addresses, then talk about truly full-service comic shops, followed by a discussion of out queer creators. How important is it that a queer comics creator is OUT? You’ll also hear our interview with Marc Andreyko, creator and writer of the fantastic Manhunter book. Eric swoons. Next week: a continuation of our discussion about out queer creators, and an interview with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. In case we haven’t driven this point into the ground, YOU NEED TO GO TO CAPE NEXT YEAR. It’s like Woodstock for queer comics fans. Less mud, though.

If you haven't read the most recent issues of Midnighter, Fables, All-Star Superman, Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, Justice League, or Countdown, and you don't share Brett's enthusiasm for getting spoiled, look out! Your CBQ hosts also speculate which character in the X-Mansion is most likely to have a "Bob Marley: Legend" poster in their sleeping quarters.
