I'm sure this is just schlock-riffic, but the Los Angeles Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention takes place this Sunday, April 26, 2009, from 10am-5pm at the Shrine Auditorium.

More details are here: http://www.comicbookscifi.com/

The guest list is kind of funny -- "CRYSTAL was also featured as an Orion Green skinned Slave Girl in an episode of ENTERPRISE. CRYSTAL will be signing autographs all day." I bet she will...

But they have a 6 hour anime film festival of a bunch of Funimation episodes, including the newly released Heroic Age series which I saw at the Seattle Sakura Con anime festival and is really pretty awesome. And I've heard very good things about Baccano... Actually, that whole anime lineup looks pretty good, and for the $8.00 ticket price, it might be worth it just for that and you could pretty much ignore the rest.

They have these about every other month at the Shrine and I always walk out with a huge haul. Around 60 dealers or so. Just don't expect anything too fancy. It's very old school. Quarter bins, recent comics for a buck, toys, signings from local actors from forgotten Sci-Fi shows. Ummm............porn. You kinda need to get your hands dirty and really dig for stuff but it makes for a fun Sunday.

But the deals are good. Last time I was there I bought a few Marvel Masterworks for $18 a piece, a couple of Omnibus's for half off, a DC Showcase for 5 bucks, and some late bronze age Marvel comics for a few bucks.

I don't know if I'll be going this time as the LA Festival of Books is the same day at UCLA. (They have a huge comic book section now too!) But the LA CBQueers should meet up there sometime. If would be a cool meeting place.

I actually ran into Richard Starking at Hi De Ho a little while ago, buying comics with his daughter. (I wouldn't have known it was him, but he was telling one of the owners that they were out of one of his Elephantmen books, and I remembered his accent from a podcast interview that I heard him on.)

I wondered what weekend it was, this year. Have a great time!

There's also the get together next Saturday, the 20th, at the Skirball for their comic book exhibit. (Details here.)

I'll definitely go... as soon as I get my time machine finished. (I just need to find some Illudium Q-36, and I'll be set.)
