Sorry that this post is all over the place. Has anyone else read Freaks of the Heartland?
So I had seen the cover to the first issue of this book a year or so ago and I spent way too much time looking for the issues to find out that no one had them. I kept asking about a trade and no one seemed to have that either.
So I gave up.
Until yesterday!!!! I was at my local comic book retailer and was about to bring my books to the counter when I saw a copy of the trade laying on a shelf. Needless to say I bought and I just finished reading it.
What a great book! It was pretty evident what direction the story was going to take but, when there have been so many stories told over time, it is hard to not see the end of the plot. What I didn't expect was the way in which some of the scenes played out. I don't understand all of the powers of the freaks, or if they all even have powers, but Will's powers play prominently into the WOW moments in this book Click here to see the hidden message and/or spoilers...
(although I think that the fire breathing was a bit of overkill...)
And of all of the characters, I felt so bad for Click here to see the hidden message and/or spoilers...
the mother. It's bad enough to have a jackass for a husband but, when she finally sees Will on the day that they leave, we see that faint smile and wave. My heart just broke because I knew then that she was going to kill herself.
The art is great when the characters are standing still but gets muddled when there is action happening. I found myself having to spend a lot more time on these panels trying to decipher them and am still scratching my head about one or two though.
Would love to hear your take.
