If you have watch anime films and television series in the past 10 years and are a serious admirer of the art-form, this man has touched your heart or mind in some way. RIP
It's a real shame; he was one of my favorite directors, and I'm really sorry not to see any more of his work. Most of our set might know him from Tokyo Godfathers, which got awards and was well publicized here, about 3 homeless guys (one of them a transvestite) caring for a lost/discarded baby. But, IMO, he really shines in his more surreal work, like Millennium Actress, and Paranoia Agent, and, my favorite, Paprika (which I highly recommend to everyone).

When I heard about this my heart broke a little. I've seen every Satoshi Kon project and though there are those I like more than other not a single one was overall disappointing he was always a sure thing. And at 47, I just assumed there would always be more films or OAV to watch in the future. He left us too soon.

You're right, at 47, you just assume that he'll be continuing to make amazing films for years to come, decades even. He was one of the leaders of his generation of film makers; there aren't many players in any industry whose passing hurts the industry as a whole, but he was one of them.
I'm not usually too bummed out by death; I'm a reincarnationist, and, to me, it's not much different than someone moving to Europe. You won't be seeing them again for a while, but it's not permanent. But I'm pretty sure they don't make anime in Europe, or, if they do, we never get to see it here. So no more awesome movies and TV from Kon-san; we'll eventually see the project he was working on when he died, but that's it.
It sucks.

Here's a translated version of his parting message. It's not brief, and its emotionally powerful, so you may not want to read it at work. (I'm just posting this, for now, and I'll be reading it later, myself.)
