So in Buffy this week, she's revealed to be bi. She sleeps with hottie slayer Satsu, and everyone ends up stumbling in on the two of them in bed. Including Willow who seems to have some pretty hurt feelings.

What did you all think of this? And when will Andrew finally get a boyfriend?

When WILL Andrew finally get a boyfriend?

I'm a certifiable Buffy fanatic, and I think it's awesome that Joss Whedon would take the character in a queer direction... it's big deal because Buffy is more than a comic character, she's a pop culture icon in her own right. It's a high profile outing (bi-sexual outing anyway) that made major news networks.

However Andrew's inclusion in this issue got me to thinking, and as queer-friendly as Buffy is, I was kind of irked that Buffy would go bi before Andrew's even officially come out. Maybe it seems like major nitpicking, but as one of countless gay male fans of the Buffyverse, it would be nice to see some representation and not just get hints and jokes about Andrew's sexuality.

Maybe Buffy's fling will inspire Andrew to come out?

I like the cluelessness that Andrew has about his own sexual leanings, like in the episode (I think it was called "Storytime") where he's videotaping everything and stumbles across Willow and Kennedy making out on the couch but can only comment on Xander's fine workmanship on fixing the living room window. It just sort of works better. If they have a male character come out, it would be better if it was somebody like Principal Wood, or Owen from Season One ('member him?) or Ford from Season Two.

I'm not thrilled with Buffy being revealed as bi. It just seems sensationalist to me that it would come out now, after so much canon has already been created for the character.

To be fair, there was the character of Larry, the bully who came out during the high school years. He was very much on the sidelines... and he ended up being killed during the Season 3 finale.

I love the Andrew character and agree that part of his being closeted fits with his immaturity... but I think he needs to mature (as we saw glimpses of in "Storyteller"). For me, the joke of his clueless sexuality has grown extremely tired. It just isn't funny anymore, and I feel like its reflective of the double standard of lesbian versus gay male portrayals in media, even in a show as enlightened as Buffy.

Lesbians = main characters and lots of bedroom scenes.

Gay Men = veiled hints and "call me Lois" jokes.

And how about Lorne on Angel? He should have been gay, but no. They chickened out and made him straight. It still pisses me off when I watch Angel.

I never saw Andrew as being sexual -- and I'm not sure I want to think about it. He's a geek, and geeks aren't sexual regardless of their sexuality. Present company excepted, of course. Wink

Buffy, on the other hand, was always a college lesbian experience waiting to happen. And now that she's surrounded almost exclusively with hot, young, athletic, Slayer women? Some kind of post-battle estrogen fest was inevitable, at some point. It's not permanent... she'll be back looking for a Giant-Sized Man-Thing soon enough. But a fling with a cute girl she likes, who loves her, after a battle's gotten them both worked up? Oh yeah.

So, even though I dropped Buffy, was thinking of going to the Amber Benson signing at 4:30p today at Challenger's. Anyone else going?
