|

Hey, all. I've noticed that there are several people posting on the message boards that are from the LA area. So my questions are:
Where are some good comic shops in LA? I usually go to Golden Apple on Melrose near LaBrea, but that's really the only one I know of. They don't always have some of the things that I'm looking for, so I'm wondering what are some other quality places...
Does anyone know of any fun groups or "comic book clubs" that get together to gab about the latest happenings in geekdom? I have to say that I know plenty of queers here, but very few comic book queers. |

Hi! Hollywood here. Where are you at?
Golden Apple is the quintessential fanboy store. Wednesday nights are sometimes busy and fun to hear people chatting up comics. The staff has been always cool to me.
Meltdown Comics on Sunset is huge and a little highbrow. They have damn near everything including overseas comics, and toys both old and new. Gallery in the back. They throw great parties: http://io9.com/354590/io9-at-the-y-the-last-man-party-in-los-angeles
Hi Dee Ho Comics in Santa Monica. Laid back, nice back issue section. Huge store.
DJ's Universal Comics in Studio City. Smaller, kinda hidden, a few comics professionals frequent DJ's. Unannounced signings! A few months ago I had a talk with Marc Guggenhiem who was there signing Blade and Wolverine. Since it's close to the studios some LA based comics/television pros just hang there. ( This is an assumption, but I see an awful lot of pros there for a small modest store.)
ComicsSmash! Down the street from DJ's. Haven't been there but it's looks OK.
Earth-2. In Sherman Oaks: http://www.earth2comics.com/ Very clean store, very friendly staff and last time I was there, good deals on comic trades and bundles.
House of Secrets in Burbank. Cool looking store, little sittin' nooks to read stuff, very organized: http://www.artoffiction.com/HOS_Info.html
Secret Headquarters in Hollywood/Silverlake. This store is BEAUTIFUL. Check out their "surveillance" page on their site: http://www.thesecretheadquarters.com/index.php They host gallery openings too.
Things From Another World at the Universal Citywalk, near the end of the strip by the entrance to Universal Studios. It's a bit overpriced, given that its in a tourist trap, but a fun place to visit.
I don't know of any LA based groups that meet or anything. But it's a great idea.

I'm a Hi De Ho guy, in Santa Monica, within walking distance of their store. I'm told by a friend who worked there that they have a large gay clientele, and a fair number of entertainment industry people also -- not that I hang out there long enough to notice. But they're good people. They also have a decent manga section, and usually pick up new Yaoi titles every week or so.
They're having a parking lot sale this Sunday, March 30th, BTW. Per their website:
| Quote: | # Fill a Box with Comics of Your Choice! Long Box - $30.00
# Short Box - $20.00
- OR -
# 1 Comic - 25 cents
# 25 Comics - $4.99
AND... CLEARANCE BOOKS!
# 1 Book - $3.00
# 4 Books - $10.00
AND... MORE INSIDE THE STORE!
# 50% Off Regular Back lssues
# 50% Off Archives & Essentials
# 50% Off Masterworks & Showcase Books |
The store opens at 11:00, and the sale starts at 12:00.
I wouldn't say no to a "West Coast CBQ" meeting over coffee, but we should be careful. A collection of any 3 comics fans automatically spawns a podcast, and who has that kind of time? (FYI, a "podcast of comics fans" is the latest new collective noun added to Webster's).

I go to the House of Secrets in Burbank most often. It is my neighborhood store and the sales people are awesome. Plus they give you a discount AND free bags and boards!!!!
I've been to Golden Apple on Melrose as well as the one down the street from Cal State Northridge. They are definitely a fanboy's wet dream but I get a bad vibe from the people that work at both of their locations. They are definitely the "big business" comic shops.
I think I will check out some of the others that have been mentioned here! And I definitely would love to meet up with teh other CBQs in the area! |

A group of dolphins is a pod, so I guess it makes sense that a group of comic book queers is a podcast.
Thanks for all the great suggestions! I plan to check out a bunch of those places. I've been to a couple of them so far, but I rely on subscriptions to get most of the comics that I'm really interested in, so I don't make it to the comic store as much as I should. Plus, whenever I go I spend WAY too much money. I sometimes have this secret fear that the people that work in comic book stores are snickering behind my back because oftentimes I just get X-Men books, and nothing "hip" or "indie"... but that's just my own paranoia. OR IS IT?
I definitely think it would be fun to get some peeps together. Although I don't drink coffee, so I might have to drink a big-girl-sized martini instead. |

I just drove by Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash in West LA, on Pico. Have any of you been there? I didn't have time to go in, but was wondering if it's a pretty good store. I'll probably stop over there on a lunch break later this week or next to check it out.

I haven't been there, but according to their website, it looks like a Kevin Smith outlet more than a general comics store. The pictures look like there ought to be more there than that, but the website ordering has a limited comics selection.
Do let us know what you find there! That's almost right on my way home from work, and I could be persuaded to detour a few blocks if it's worth it.

I've been to the one in Red Bank, here in NJ and its just OK in regard to comics content. It is cool to see a lot of the movie props and stuff though.

So I just came back from my visit to Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash on Pico. It is actually a really big store, but it is almost completely for DVDs. They really do have a huge DVD selection, but as far as comics goes it is only average. They have all the basics (I got my Young X-Men and Secret Invasion), but not an overly large selection, and I didn't see any older back issues beyond a few months. They may have more stock in the back, but it is curtained off for employees only.
Not a bad store really, but the focus is definitely on DVDs. Oh, and they did have a few props and costumes from the Kevin Smith movies.

Good to know, thanks. I can now relegate them to my "Places to order from online, if I need to" category -- which has grown to be everything but a handful of stores anyway.

Lucky bastard! I had to be up in Thousand Oaks all day, and wasn't able to make it.
